Murphy's Law

This is to inform any interested parties as to Murphy's Law's specification.

We purchased Murphy about 4 years ago from a competitive sailor who had campaigned her at most of previous quarter ton cups so she was in very good racing order.

Since then she has had little use. We updated Murphy with a replacement mast, acquired from Panic which was treated to a new mast of the same specification. Casse Tete [www.casse-tete.co.uk] modified Murphy by moving the chain plates aft and outboard and removed the running backstays.  They also re-sprayed the hull topsides.

The new mast was taller and had higher hounds [LL increased from 8.22 to 10.00] enabling her to carry a taller number one so we got Ultimate Sails to provide a new mylar aramid headsail of 105%. This new sail has only been used on about 6 outings.

There has also been a change in the height of P from 9.14 to 9.72, although the black band could be moved slightly higher. We have purchased a second hand full height carbon main made by UK Sail makers which matches the new P. This sail has been overhauled by One Sails but not yet used.

I am also aware that with taller hounds Murphy could carry a larger symmetrical spinnaker. Having a half tonner [Sage an MGHS30] I have a range of spinnakers I could offer with SLU/SLE values of circa 10.16 which would be ideal for beat and run racing.

The last rating in 2013 was 0.890, but that was with the smaller main.

In terms of price, we are asking £13,000.

Please let me know if you are interested.

The details we received from the previous owner in 2012 were as follows [All the sails are in storage so I may review the inventory]:

IRL 506 MURPHY’S LAW

Class: Quarter Tonner

Designer: Boyd

Year: 1987

Rating: 0.893 (2011)

Murphy’s Law was designed for the 1987 Quarter Ton Cup by the Irish designer Boyd and built from foam sandwich by Puppeteer Yachts. She is one of a select few boats to have competed in every Quarter Ton Cup since the class was resurrected in 2005. She has been partially optimised for IRC, including removing the inboard engine, fairing the IOR crease in the hull, fitting a modern dagger shaped rudder, increasing the spinnaker size, adding a longer spinnaker pole and fitting twin guard wires to enable hiking. It would not take much effort to further optimise her, for example by adopting a single spreader rig. She was extensively upgraded in 2008 to include a new outboard, 12V system and instruments. She has been maintained to a high standard and includes many recent racing sails, ropes and deck gear. She also includes a custom built double axle road trailer, new in 2008 and a yard cradle. The rig, standing and running rigging were replaced in 2006.

The topsides are painted with Awlgrip. She is ready to race and travel anywhere.
