I had a ride out today aboard Purple Haze, now based at Cardiff Bay Yacht Club. This is a return to the area as she was previously sailed some years ago from Barry Yacht Club. Anyway, 3 of today's crew, the owner, the navigator and myself are all ex. Fireball sailors from the 70's at Llandegfedd Reservoir so know each other well (combined age circa 183 yrs). Wind blew hard at times, boat recorded 12.1 it's surfing at one point without kite I hasten to add. From my perspective as first time on a 1/4 tonner (sailed X-99's, First Class 10's, J24 a Surprise 26 and some odds and sods over the decades) this was a lovely introduction to this class of yacht. Fast, responsive and enjoyable. The boat looks good and sails well and is a credit to the 1/4 ton association, loved the " still crazy " logo, is that a certain Tolkien character of 1/4 ton fame holding the yacht? Anyway, for me, a great introduction to the 1/4 ton arena, with links back to Cowes as know and sailed with Chris Ratsey who I know helmed "The Haze" on more than one occasion to good effect!
