With great sadness, I have to announce the death this morning of Russell Smith, owner of Zipper. Zipper was kept up in Burnham where she successfully raced under IRC frequently winning her class in East Anglia.
Russell bought her down with a top team from Burnham to compete in the 2006 Quarter Ton Cup. He had planned to bring her down South again this season but became ill a couple of months ago. Derek Morland (of Purple Haze and more recently Menace) will be attending the funeral - he did the 1979 Fastnet with Russell. Zipper was sold this past weekend and will be seen racing in the Solent this summer.
